Dear all, whilst there are many reasons why people fail at Internet marketing there are a number of common themes that I have picked up through working with clients and working with Internet marketing experts. This is not an exhaustive list but I’d hope that this will give you some ideas of the things to avoid when first launching a business online.
No Measurement – People don’t know their numbers (e.g. what the conversion rate is for their sales page). This is a typical one as many people rightly or wrongly just do not have access to their web sites stats. This is for a number of reason such as a) people have a webmaster who looks after their site and they either have not given access to this information or b) people do their own web site maintenance but don’t know much about this. One good tip here is to appreciate the difference between hits to your web site versus unique visitors. You see one person could cause 6 hits if they looked at a few pages and then came back a few days later. So although you got 6 hits, or more, this was only one person. So unique visitors is a much better stat to work with. Also you need to know how long your visitors stayed on your site and what they viewed when they were there.
Easily De-motivated – People get a trickle of traffic and then give up (no staying power, lack of focus, no idea of where they are headed, no goals set, no monitoring against goals). Easy to put a great web site up, but not so easy to stay focused and see the project through. Part of the problem here is that no goals are set at the out set – so it becomes increasingly difficult to determine whether you are moving towards success or not. Rule number one – set some clear goals and objectives. Also consider a number of different strategies for how to get traffic to your website – don’t put all your eggs in one basket!
No Investment – People won’t pay a single penny or dime for traffic (no clearly defined budget, no longer term return on investment (ROI) analysis. Whether you pay out for traffic, use SEO or social media there will be an investment of either time or money. To think that you can get traffic simply for FREE is not a realistic way to start your online business. There will be a cost, one way or another, so set your budget and work out what you need to do to get yourself into profit whilst offering great value to your prospects and customers.
Lack of Knowledge – People won’t learn how to get traffic. We probably all deep down have an idea of either what we should be doing to get more traffic or who we should be speaking to or what we should be reading. But many people just do not want to expand their knowledge in this area. I think that part of the problem here is that there is so much information on the Internet about this that it is too overwhelming for most people. When humans get overwhelmed we just end up doing nothing. But there is a solution – take some action. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get the success you want straight away. There is no failure – only feedback. So even if your first book or Internet program doesn’t work for you at least you’ll have more information to go on.
Complicated Sales Process – This is probably one of the most depressing reasons why people don’t succeed online. Just imagine that people are queuing to buy your product or service. I mean they love it, but the purchase process (shopping cart) is too complicated and buyers exit before they have gotten all the way through the purchase process. To avoid this make it very clear on the sales page of exactly what your buyers need to do. Test this process out for yourself and consider how many steps there are in the buying process and what information do you offer your buyers to encourage them through the buying process.
I hope that you have found this information useful. I have included loads more information of what to avoid when marketing an online business in my special report. You can find out more about my special report by clicking here
